The Chinese believed that heaven granted each dynastic ruler, a mandate to rule. If the ruler provided good government, the people owed the ruler complete obedience, or else they had the right to rebel.

The Chou Dynasty (1122-256/255 B.C.)

Founded taoism, and saw major advances in Chinese philosophy. Overthrew the Shang dynasty.

The Ch'in Dynasty (221-206 B.C.)

Succeeded in unifying feudal China. Created Great Wall of China.

The Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - A.D. 220)

One of the most glorious eras in history. Establishes trade with Europe & western Asia. This introduces Buddhism from India.

The T'ang Dynasty (618-907)

Created the empire that extended from Pacific Ocean to Persia and India. Most effective system of government. Invented gunpowder and block printing.

The Sung Dynasty (960-1279)

Created Neo-Confucianism, which dominates Chinese intellectual life for the next millenium.

The Yuan Dynasty (1206 - 1368)

First foriegn dynasty in China's history. Overrun by Genghis Khan.

The Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644)

Ming emperors tried to avoid forieign influence after Mongolian effects.

The Ch'ing Dynasty (1644-1911/1912)

Manchuria conquered China, and a second foreign dynasty was created. Toppled, and ends emperial rule.
